New MLS Team Announced
Manchester City and NY Yankees combine to even out Major League Soccer
May 22nd
It's official!
The Major League Soccer 20th expansion club will be located in New York City.
Speculation had been rife that David Beckham had been interested in a move for a club in Miami - this could still happen - but number 20 is most definitely going to the Big Apple. Expect fierce rivalries to begin between Red Bulls and New York City FC supporters.
NYCFC will begin playing in the 2015 season, and will be supported by two of the biggest names in world sport; The New York Yankees and majority share holders Manchester City.
On paper it looks like a match made in heaven, as does the location.
City have enormous financial clout and finished second in this year's Premier League title race, winning it the year previously. The Yankees, well, enough said...
Soccer is growing rapidly in the US, with attendances and TV revenues growing exponentially year-on-year. The inclusion of a twentieth team will do the MLS a power of good.
