England U21 v Italy U21

England's opener is a real toughie...

European U21 Championship, Israel

Wednesday 5th May, 19:30 BST

Last time out: an impressive England thump Austria 4-0 in a very nice curtain-raising warm-up.

It could be argued that England's win over Austria was hardly surprising, given that by the time the Austrians had gone 2-0 down they'd already lost two players through red cards.

But - as most cliched managers will happily tell you - you can only beat what's put up against you, and the manner in which the English side saw off a tidy Austrian outfit was highly impressive (see match highlights below).

The England squad's form as they flew out to Tel Aviv  is impossible to sniff at: five games, five wins, scored 14, conceded zilch. Stuart Pearce has already stated his desire to stick around longer; currently doing a fantastic job nurturing a very talented set of young guns.

Yes, this is a strong squad alright...

SSS Advice: should you fancy England to win to nil tonight, how about the 21/5 with Coral? Nice.

Another big plus for the three lions tonight is the lack of proper Italian build-up: their last game came on the 10th September in a 4-2 defeat of the Republic of Ireland.

But in Fabio Borini they have a player of true potential; the ex -Swansea striker has shown real promise at Anfield, when not on the injured list. Add to this Mattia Destro, Roma's fill-in striker who has already netted six times when coming off the bench, and you can see that the English should be wary.

In certain circles there has been talk of 'the new English dawn' of football: let's not get too carried away. Fans of a certain age will remember hearing this on several occasions in the past. One thing's for sure though: this lot could do very well here...
